The region surrounding Castle Rock was originally inhabited by the Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians. It was founded back in the 1870s when people started to settle there, drawn by rumors of gold. Castle Rock was then chosen as seat of the county because of its central location. It was not the gold rush, however, that made the name for the town. It was the discovery of a stone named rhyolite, an igneous volcanic rock, that garnered popularity for the town and started the settlement there.
